How are words counted?
Every run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks is one word; punctuation stays attached to its word.
What does “English words” count?
Only alphabetic words. Contractions and hyphenated words (don’t, well-known) count as one; numbers and non-Latin text are skipped.
Why might Word or Google Docs differ?
Programs treat hyphens, slashes and numbers slightly differently, so counts can differ by 1–2%.
How many characters is a 250-word essay?
Roughly 1,400–1,500 characters with spaces, since English words average about 4.7 letters.
